“Caminhos Gerais” is the name of the project created by me, Artur Sgambatti Monteiro, which aims to publish an illustrated travel notebook reporting a 3-month journey of solitude along the espinhaço range and the Brazilian caatinga. A journey that besides travelling through the backlands of Brazil, goes deep into the backlands of his existence. Questioning not only the role of travelling in our lives, this book is an invitation for us to get to know Brazil and ourselves through it.
I decided to go on an incursion with my motorbike, an '89 Honda Sahara, along the Estrada Real, a heritage route that preserves the original colonial gold and diamond routes. I felt, in a certain way, as if I were in the mines, digging my understanding of the country and myself. My stories mix the historical with the concrete and fantastic. Secular villages, congadas, waterfalls and friends colour the tales and make me realize how I blend with Brazil and with everyone I meet. I carry within me all the power of my history and of those with whom I crossed paths. I still reverberate learnings from the road that I intend to share here.
Instants have the capacity to transform us. Present moments formed in the past have the ability to imprison us or make us fly. The choice, always, is ours. I unveil in this book the understanding of home and travel as small summaries of life, where, in the end, we are the great authors of our destinies.
WHAT IS GENERAL WAYS - A book and its times.
01) Today: from where I see everything.
"Exu killed a bird yesterday with a stone that he threw today", with these phrases Emicida guides the narrative of his film "Amarelo - É tudo para ontem". Besides the urgency of fighting historical problems that condition the present, the Yoruba saying can be interpreted in a personal way. Individually we are also the result of our environment, history and decisions. Whether they are conscious or not. Changing understandings about past facts, it is possible to change today, to kill the bird of yesterday and allow it to fly. This book and its publication is also that. The first chapter of other stories I wish to tell.

02) Yesterday: images from the rear-view mirror.
The path for me to be able to arrive here went through many mishaps. Soon it will be seven years of this journey, during which I changed my life a few times until I accepted the road as home and this book as a door towards the new. Although it is my first work 100% authorial, I have already developed two other materials.
Traces of a River: A few days after the Mariana dam failure I traveled with my friend Vladimir Ospina along the Doce River to know its people, its tragic history and the regeneration that was beginning. From this trip we launched a book and a film (made with the support of my friends Anninha, Yzadora and Gustavo). A project made by many hands with the support of institutions like the Gwärtler Stiftung and the IASS-Potsdam. Check the book here.
Between Rivers, Cities and Forests: a textbook for children and young people, focusing on explaining the urban reality of the Brazilian Amazon, with special focus on the Metropolitan Region of Manaus. 03) Tomorrow: active hope.
From an impulse to travel new roads comes my creative initiative - "Makaxera - Paths in colours". Through it I publish my works and continue to tell stories about social and environmental issues through a personal view. In this sense my first book, "Caminhos Gerais", is a milestone of emancipation. It, in itself, is the introduction to the book that follows, the paths of Makaxera. My work here is to concretise this future in the present. To solidify dreams.

WHO I AM
I was born in São Paulo and some time ago I discovered my travelling identity, of mobile residence and colourful travelling dreams. My greatest passions are drawing and painting, discovering where the roads and rivers lead, the history of people and the geographies of this big world.
I have created my artistic career between drawing and environmental conservation in attempts to express my feelings and what I see from over the shoulders of those who preceded me and created understandings about today. I carry with me my history and my encounters, all of them.
I am an environmental manager and master in urbanism and specialize in the role of urban art as a factor of resistance and popular culture. I spent years in the Amazon working with conservation policies and years in Germany preparing the jump. I worked with graffiti for a while and taught about it in schools and in the course Via Marginal (Hiato, 2014). I attended the 5th Urban Sketching International Symposium in Paraty (USK, 2014) and a door opened. I spent the next few years drawing practically every day. I specialized in watercolour (which I am still studying) and contributed to several publications, books, magazines (1 and 2) and even painted a TV studio for PUC/SP. I have published two books: Traces of a River, released in Berlin in 2021 and Among Rivers, Cities and Forests, contracted by UFAM (Federal University of Amazonas). I also held an exhibition at the 27th Garanhuns Winter Festival about the Rio Doce (FIG, 2017). Today I have an artistic development scholarship from the Gwärtler foundation.
GOALS OF THE CAMPAIGN
The "Caminhos gerais" project has two complementary goals which are: 1) Edition and publication of the book Caminhos Gerais and 2) Translation and publication of the book Caminhos Gerais in English.
To materialize this dream, GOAL 1 is R$ 10.600,00 (aprox. €1,900.00) and GOAL 2 is R$ 3.900,00 (aprox. €700.00). Totaling R$14.500,00 if both are reached (aprox. €2,600.00).
ESTIMATE OF COSTS
All the values will be used exclusively in the stages of elaboration of the book, its layout and printing. All this so that the work is the most elaborate possible and so that we can remunerate all those involved, the site here and disclosure campaigns.
The goal is to cover part of the costs for the realization of the book and will be R$ 14,500.00 (fourteen thousand and five hundred reais). So that the rest will be invested from my pocket, so the invitation is that you be my partner in this journey. The whole project is estimated to have total investments of R$22,800.00 (aprox. €4,150.00). Details follow below:
