Among Rivers, Cities and Forests
This project translate natural beauties and key features of the Manaus Metropolitan Area, the biggest city in the Amazon and its region.
More than 2.2 million inhabitants live in Manaus and many important decisions are made there about the future of the city and the forest. Its size and economic dynamics are linked to the Manaus Free Trade Zone and its industrial center that was created in 1957 and is one of the largest industrial centres in Brazil. The installation of industries in the city attracted people from different regions of the Amazon and from other states, causing the city to grow at a very fast pace. Its population jumped from 139,000 in 1950 to 2 million in 2020, an increase of more than 16 times in 70 years. This is the third fastest growth of all the country's capitals in this period.
Manaus became a large urban island in the middle of the forest: a metropolis in the forest. Such fact makes its surroundings to have accelerated dynamics and development patterns in a different way from other cities in the state. Thinking about it the state of Amazonas created in 2007 the Manaus Metropolitan Area to understand and better plan the metropolis. This book presents different aspects of the region and its urban-forest reality.
